About
Welcome to Cocorico, a hidden gem nestled at 96 Jane St in the vibrant heart of Edinburgh. Known for its welcoming atmosphere and delightful culinary offerings, Cocorico stands as a testament to the rich tapestry of French-inspired cuisine, skillfully crafted by the talented duo Ana and Mickael.
As I stepped into Cocorico, I was immediately enveloped by its warm, inviting ambiance. The dining area radiates a cozy yet modern feel, with sunlight streaming in and a decor that hints at a fresh, funky vibe. Both regulars and newcomers are greeted with genuine warmth, creating a space that feels like home—a rarity in today's fast-paced dining environment.
When it comes to the food, Cocorico does not disappoint. The menu is a harmonious celebration of simple, fresh ingredients, prepared with an unmistakable French influence. Signature dishes like the classic croque monsieur and the delectable Cullen skink showcase the kitchen's dedication to flavor and quality. For those who seek something sweet, the gluten-free almond cake comes highly recommended and has garnered rave reviews for both its texture and taste.
One of the standout features of Cocorico is its commitment to accommodating diverse dietary needs, evident from a customer's testimony about the fantastic gluten-free breakfast options. The culinary team here takes pride in ensuring that every guest leaves satisfied, regardless of their preferences. Regular patrons rave about the chai latte and the irresistible Iles flottantes, a dessert that many find hard to resist.
The attention to detail extends beyond the kitchen. Service at Cocorico is quick, friendly, and efficient, making for a pleasant dining experience. Ana, the owner, has a wonderful rapport with her customers, often recognizing regulars and ensuring everyone feels welcomed. This personal touch adds to the charm of the establishment and invites patrons to linger just a little longer over their meal—a sentiment echoed by many who have dined here.
With favorable reviews highlighting its reasonable prices for such delightful offerings, Cocorico has quickly become one of Edinburgh’s cherished eateries. Whether you're looking for a leisurely breakfast or a delightful lunch, Cocorico promises to deliver not just a meal, but an experience filled with warmth, flavor, and a touch of French elegance. I can wholeheartedly recommend taking a journey to Cocorico—an adventure in taste awaits you!
“ This place we found through Google reviews. All the reviews were true. My wife wanted gluten free breakfast and we called and inquired about it before we went there. It was a nice , cozy , pleasant place. The lady who was there welcomed us warmly and suggested a nice coffee for my wife which she really liked. Food was really good as well as the prizes. Definitely recommend and going back again. The gluten free almond cake was top notch. ”
“ It was amazing that my friend found it by chance, but it was not a place where there could be a restaurant at all I liked it because it was kind, the food was delicious, and the price was low. Chai latte was really delicious I heard that cake is delicious, but I want to go eat cake next time ”
“ Lovely place, we go regularly or as often as we can at least. The menu is always wonderful, the atmosphere friendly and it’s a wee gem of a place - one of those IYKYK. Personal favourites are the Cullen Skink and croque monsieur! Although everything is delicious. Bonuses are it’s super clean, lots of parking, and outside seats too for a sunny day. ”
“ I've had the pleasure of following Ana and Mickael's culinary journey for over fifteen years, from their Water of Leith Bistro days on Coburg Street, through Canonmills and now at Cocorico on Jane Street. What keeps me coming back is the genuine bistro atmosphere they've cultivated. Cocorico offers something wonderfully authentic in an era of high-efficiency, Instagram-optimised eateries. You won't find people eating a room-temp grain bowl under a pink neon sign that says “Living My Best Life” in cursive here. Instead, you'll experience a warm, lived-in space where the focus is on connection, conversation and great food. The menu celebrates simple, fresh ingredients prepared with unmistakable French influence. Each dish arrives with care and attention. I love the main options (croque monsieur and varieties) but the specials are always carefully considered seasonal cooking. I particularly recommend their Iles flottantes, which I find hard to resist and look at regretfully when I can't make the day they are made. Ana has declined my suggestions about home delivery options. Yes, it's tucked away in an industrial corner of Leith - a port with historic French connections from the Auld Alliance days – but this makes Cocorico feel like a perfectly placed hidden gem worth seeking out. After fifteen years of loyalty to Ana and Mickael's vision, I can confidently say they've created something special at Cocorico. ”
“ I took my two beloved friends for breakfast in this beautiful venue on Saturday 15th March and I was completely bowled over. The restaurant was decorated with a funky, fresh vibe with sunlight streaming in. The service was quick, friendly and extremely efficient thanks to Ana who seemed to know and welcome all of the other customers in the place. There were lots of delicious breakfast options, even for a fußsy caffeine dodging vegetarian like myself. The vegetarian breakfast was delicious - how do they make those mushrooms taste soooo good? My guests really enjoyed their breakfasts too. Being old friends, we lingered possibly a bit too long but we felt welcome the whole time. I was pleasantly shocked by the reasonable bill, especially as this eaterie is located in Edinburgh. I highly recommend Cocorico for fresh and delicious breakfast and lunches and will return on my next visit through from Ayrshire. ”
“ Arguably one of Edinburgh's greatest hidden gems. A warm and cheerful welcome announces your arrival though the double doors. A great spot for food if you are a dog owner. My wee pup loves to be made a fuss of when we go. Delicious food. My personal favourite is a Madame Champignon (a croque mushroom with a fried egg on top served with French fries and homemade coleslaw) followed by one of the most incredible ranges of sweets and cakes. Anything Mickael (the chef) does with meringue is incredible. If there's ile flottante (Julia Child's favourite dessert I must add...I pity her for never getting a chance to taste Mickael's) or framboisier cake on offer then get it while it lasts! I implore with you to follow their social media so you know when they are on the menu. They are too good to be missed. Here's to many more tasty visits to Cocorico ”
“ Wonderful food, wonderful owners. Our daughter introduced us to this great spot a few years ago, and we make sure to visit when in from Texas. Even if we come for breakfast, we make sure to take some of the amazing desserts home for later. ”
“ We have been visiting Cocorico since Ana and Mika moved from their previous venture, The Water of Leith Cafe Bistro, which we also loved. We are regular visitors because we appreciate fabulous food, the friendly service and the relaxed atmosphere the cafe offers. The Croques are always excellent, as are the bakes - if you get a chance to sample Mika's Framboisier cake, take it! Cocorico is often busy with both takeaway and sit in customers - for good reason - yet despite being a small two person team, Ana and Mika always find time to make you feel welcome and deliver consistently yummy food and good service. I was bit confused/surprised to read a previous negative review regarding a visit with babies/prams. We have been in several times with our little one from newborn to now (he is now 10 months) and nothing has ever been too much trouble. As with many cafes and restaurants in Edinburgh, visiting with prams is always going to be hit or miss (why do they make prams so enormous?!) so we do our best to message ahead to make sure we aren't going to take up too much space and can secure a table that suits our needs/doesn't impact on movement around the cafe but every time we have popped by unplanned, Ana and Mika have done there best to squeeze us in (quite literally at times, helping me squeeze our rather wide pram through the door when I'm alone! ) and we have felt relaxed and looked after. Despite a small bathroom space they have still gone to the effort of providing fold away changing facilities, which makes such a difference when visiting with our wee one too! Whether you are visiting alone, with a friend, as a group or with children (or fur babies!) in tow, you can be sure that you will be welcomed in and looked after. Just remember to book ahead at peak times like weekends as it's a very popular spot! ”
